Order of the Oppressed Characters

Order of the Oppressed Characters

1. Onus -- The Narrator
Onus is a freshman at Michigania University. He was raise in an all-white suburbs and was blindly placed in all black residence hall on campus. His favorite authors are Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald

2. Dred -- The Roommate
Dred is a senior at Michigania University. He loves everything dealing with Black Culture. His favorite books are: How Capitalism Underdeveloped Black America, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, and Black Genius (the one by Dick Gregory and the one by Walter Mosley).

3. Check -- The Underdog
Check is a sophomore. His parents are West African but he was born in the states. He tries to fit in but for whatever reason Dred's friends always push him away.

4. D'Angello --
D'Angello is popular and well thought of. He is openly gay and most of the men on campus respect him because of it. He is close friends with Dred, Guru and Sherrod Rashard.

5. Abdullah --
Abdullah is a devout muslim. His mother is Black American and his father is Arab. He does not know any of the other characters that well.

6. Lorenzo --
Lorenzo is a brown skin Mexican student. He is a devout Catholic and he loves sports.

7. Gurudas --
"Guru" is an independent hip hop artist. He has just dropped his first CD at the start of the school year when this novel takes place... in Fall of 2001.

8. Sherrod Rashard --
Sherrod Rashard is a very humble, spiritual brother. He prays, meditates, does tai chi and knows capoeira. He is also an emcee who loves freestyling. He is a sophomore

9. Malice --
Malice is a member of Order of the Oppressed or Omicron Omega. He is quite conceited and thinks that everyone has something to prove to him.

10. Manuel --
Manuel is also a member of the Order. He is humble and quiet and a devout Apostolic Christian. He is slow to anger and always encouraging.

11. Roman -- The Token Token
Roman is very similar to Onus, the narrator. He also grows up in an all white environment. But when he moves to college he joins the predominately white Order of Icarus and Phoenix or Iota Phi.

12. Chase --
Chase is a somewhat conceited white student. He's against affirmative action but he loves Roman like a brother. He thinks if Roman can do it, any other Black person can go to college without Affirmative Action. Chase is also a member of the Order of Icarus and Phoenix or Iota Phi.

13. Laverne --
Laverne is a close friend of Dred, D"Angello, Guru and Sherrod Rashard. She is somewhat popular but also known for being easy. On one hand people love her; on the other hand people call her a ho behind her back.

14. Samantha --
Samantha is an ultra cool, super-feminist. She is an activist on campus who also hangs out with Laverne, Dred, D'Angello, Guru and Sherrod Rashard. She always tries to talk to Laverne about being more "conscious" but Laverne doesn't listen. Samantha is torn because she is in love with Roman who is fiscal, social and theological conservative. Samantha's favorite books are The Vagina Monologues and anything by Alice Walker, bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins or Angela Davis.
